{"id":2158,"date":"2015-03-26T21:25:10","date_gmt":"2015-03-27T04:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cookiesorbiscuits.com\/?p=2158"},"modified":"2015-04-26T15:50:08","modified_gmt":"2015-04-26T22:50:08","slug":"curry-powder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cookiesorbiscuits.com\/?p=2158","title":{"rendered":"Curry Powder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I always have some curry powder in my pantry as I use it quite often. &nbsp; Growing up in Australia, it was a popular ingredient in many savory recipes. &nbsp;Funnily enough, I have always associated curry powder with Indian food, however I have since discovered that authentic Indian food rarely uses curry powder. &nbsp; Instead, each recipe has it&#8217;s own unique spice blend.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cookiesorbiscuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Curry-Powder-Spices.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2162\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cookiesorbiscuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Curry-Powder-Spices-680x453.jpg\" alt=\"Curry Powder Spices\" width=\"680\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cookiesorbiscuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Curry-Powder-Spices-680x453.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.cookiesorbiscuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Curry-Powder-Spices-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cookiesorbiscuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Curry-Powder-Spices-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That does not stop me from using my westernized curry powder however. &nbsp;We ran out last week when I made one of my family&#8217;s favorite meals &#8211; <a title=\"Chicken in Peanut Butter Sauce\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cookiesorbiscuits.com\/?p=340\" target=\"_blank\">Chicken in Peanut Butter Sauce<\/a>. &nbsp; As a result, you get to see how I make my own personal blend of curry &#8211; simply because I can&#8217;t live without curry powder. &nbsp; I usually mix it straight into the bowl in the background &#8211; I just wanted to show you all the different spices that I use &#8211; turmeric, mustard, cayenne pepper (which gives the curry powder it&#8217;s heat &#8211; increase this for a hotter curry powder), cumin, cardamon and coriander.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cookiesorbiscuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Mixing-the-Spices-for-Curry-Powder.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2169\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cookiesorbiscuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Mixing-the-Spices-for-Curry-Powder-680x453.jpg\" alt=\"Mixing the Spices for Curry Powder\" width=\"680\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cookiesorbiscuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Mixing-the-Spices-for-Curry-Powder-680x453.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.cookiesorbiscuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Mixing-the-Spices-for-Curry-Powder-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cookiesorbiscuits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Mixing-the-Spices-for-Curry-Powder-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;I choose to use all pre-ground ingredients as I have most of these spices in my pantry already. &nbsp; Plus I usually only remember that I need a spice mix as I&#8217;m about to make a dish and this is very quick to make. &nbsp; &nbsp;However, if you have some more time on your hands, you can always buy the spices in their whole&nbsp;form, lightly toast them and then grind them. &nbsp; To do this, you toast one kind at a time. &nbsp; Heat a dry saucepan over medium heat. &nbsp; When it&#8217;s warm, add one kind of whole spice. &nbsp; Shake the pan as the spice is browning. Remove the spice immediately from the pan to cool. &nbsp; When it&#8217;s cool, grind the spice, usually with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;field-keywords=mortar%20and%20pestle&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;sprefix=mortar%20%2Caps%2C198&amp;tag=cookorbisc-20&amp;url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;linkId=ACE3EASQZYI2QC36\" target=\"_blank\">Mortar and Pestle<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; I can fit all but 1-2 teaspoons into my 4 oz jar, filled right to the brim. &nbsp; I use that last teaspoon in which ever recipe I&#8217;m using when I&#8217;ve panicked and realized that I need more curry powder. &nbsp;
