Australian Food Terms

When I first moved to America, I was surprised at the little differences between Australia and the US.

The world of cooking was one area where I had to adapt quickly.   There were ingredients which were no longer available to me, and a whole list of new ingredients that I’d never heard of before.    Words were different, measurements were different.

Here is just a sample of terms which may help you if you come across a recipe which is written by an author from Down Under, or if you are one of my Australian readers and are wondering what on earth I am talking about!

You can sort the table by using the small arrows next to your country.

Do you use cantelope or rockmelon over there?

I still call a rockmelon, rockmelon. It’s one of those words which I have struggled to change. But here, a cantaloupe is orange and a honeydew is green.

I was born in England, my Mum is English and my Dad is American which I now reside in the USA. I love the way you translated between American and Aussie. That is so cool.
